This document tells you how to use the accompanying “Network Products Installer” disk, which you must use to install the following network software products onto Macintosh® IIci or Macintosh IIfx computers:
• AppleShare® Apple® II Support
• AppleShare File Server
• AppleShare Print Server
• AppleTalk® Internet Router
• EtherTalk®
• SMB File Transfer Utility
• TokenTalk®
The Network Products Installer does not provide an update to these products or change these products in any way. It simply installs them on your Macintosh correctly. The disk in this package does not contain any of the products listed above; you can purchase these products from your authorized Apple dealer.
When running the Network Products Installer, you will be asked to insert the product disks into your Macintosh. You should make sure they are handy before launching the Network Products Installer.
If you have questions about installation procedures that aren’t addressed by this document, refer to the networking manuals that came with the network products you are installing.
A FEW NOTES BEFORE YOU BEGIN
The next section, “Installing Software,’’ provides step-by-step instructions for using the Network Products Installer. For additional information related to specific network products, read the section “Product Notes,’’ later in this manual.
• EtherTalk users: If you need to install EtherTalk 1.2 because of your network configuration, you must first install EtherTalk version 2.0 or later by following the steps in the section ‘‘Installing Software.’’ EtherTalk versions 2.0 and later are available as free upgrades from your authorized Apple dealer. After installing EtherTalk 2.0 or later, read the section “Product Notes” for specific instructions on installing EtherTalk 1.2.
• TokenTalk users: If you are installing TokenTalk, first check the contents of your “TokenTalk Installer” disk to see if you have a folder called “TokenTalk Installer.” If you do NOT have this folder, then you’re ready to install TokenTalk.
If you do have a folder called “TokenTalk Installer,” check to see if the “TokenTalk Installer” disk is locked. If it is locked, unlock it. Then drag all of the folder’s contents onto the “TokenTalk Installer” disk icon. Finally, drag the folder to the Trash; you can then begin installing TokenTalk.
INSTALLING SOFTWARE
Make sure you have the product disks nearby; you need them to do the installation. Also, check that the Macintosh IIci or Macintosh IIfx disk onto which you are installing has system software version 6.0.5. If it doesn’t, see the manuals that came with your computer for instructions on installing system software.
1. If your computer is already on, choose Shut Down from the Special menu.
2. Insert the “Network Products Installer” disk into a floppy disk drive.
3. Turn on your Macintosh.
4. From the Finder™, select and open the “Network Products Installer” disk. The Network Products Installer window, shown in Figure 1, appears.
5. Select and open the Installer icon.
After a short pause, the Installer’s opening display, shown in Figure 2, appears.
6. After reading the opening display, click OK.
The Installation dialog box, shown in Figure 3, appears. Note that you will not have the option of using Easy Install, as you did when installing system software.
7. Select the disk onto which you want to install the software.
Change the currently selected disk by clicking the Switch Disk button.
8. Select the products you want to install.
When you select a product, an information box appears, as shown in Figure 4. To select more than one product, hold down the Shift key as you click each product. MAKE SURE YOU HAVE SELECTED THE CORRECT PRODUCTS.
IMPORTANT: If the Install button remains dimmed when you select a product, check to see that the disk onto which you are trying to install software is unlocked, is not an AppleShare volume, and is not the Installer disk.
WARNING: Be sure you have selected the correct products before you click Install. Choosing an incorrect product may force you to abruptly stop the installation and reinstall all system software.
9. Click Install.
After you click Install, you might see a dialog box similar to the one shown in Figure 5. This dialog box appears if a file on your hard disk is newer than the file currently being installed. Always click Newer to ensure that you keep the newer file.
Your Macintosh ejects the Network Products Installer disk and requests the product disk by displaying a dialog box similar to the one shown in Figure 6. Keep the Network Products Installer disk nearby because you need to insert it again later in the installation.
While the Installer installs the software, a Status dialog box similar to the one shown in Figure 7 keeps you informed of its progress.
WARNING: Clicking Stop at this point will abruptly stop the installation, and may result in an incomplete set of system software on your startup disk. If you are sure you want to stop the installation, be aware that you may have to completely reinstall all system software. See the next section, “Clicking the Stop Button To Stop Installation,” for more details.
When the Installer finishes installing the product, it displays a dialog box similar to the one shown in Figure 8.
10. Click Continue or Quit.
If you click Continue, the Installer takes you to the Installation dialog box. Go back to step 7 to change the currently selected disk or to step 8 to select the products you want to install, and continue until you’re finished.
11. Choose Restart from the Special menu.
After your Macintosh has restarted, the installation is complete. For information on using the product, refer to the product manual.
NOTE: If you need to install EtherTalk 1.2, or if you installed AppleShare File Server, AppleShare Print Server, SMB File Transfer Utility, or TokenTalk on your computer, be sure to read the section “Product Notes,” later in this manual, for instructions specific to these products.
CLICKING THE STOP BUTTON TO STOP INSTALLATION
If you click the Stop button when you see the Disk Request dialog box (see Figure 6) or the Status dialog box (see Figure 7), the dialog box shown in Figure 9 appears.
If you clicked Stop by mistake, click the Resume button. The Network Products Installer then continues installing the product you have selected. IF YOU DO NOT CLICK RESUME AT THIS POINT, YOU MAY HAVE TO REINSTALL ALL SYSTEM SOFTWARE.
If you MUST stop the installation (because, for example, you’ve selected the wrong product), click Stop. The dialog box shown in Figure 10 appears.
Because the abrupt termination may result in an incomplete system and an unusable startup disk, you should reinstall system software after clicking OK to ensure that you have a fully functioning system. Refer to the manuals that came with your computer for instructions on installing system software.
PRODUCT NOTES
• AppleShare File Server: The Network Products Installer is required only if you need to install AppleShare server software. To install the AppleShare Macintosh workstation software, refer to the “AppleShare File Server User’s Guide.”
When you use the Network Products Installer to install AppleShare File Server, it also automatically installs the Admin application from the “AppleShare Server Administration” disk and puts it in the Server folder. Be sure to run Admin after restarting to complete the file server installation; refer to the “AppleShare File Server Administrator’s Guide.”
WARNING: Do NOT use AppleShare File Server version 2.0.1 or earlier on a Macintosh Portable. Even though the Network Products Installer will work on the Portable, you might lose data if you use it as a file server.
• AppleShare Print Server: You should make sure that the print server and workstations on your network are all using the same print drivers. Using different print drivers will cause delays while the printer initializes itself for the new drivers.
• EtherTalk 1.2: To install EtherTalk 1.2, you must first install EtherTalk version 2.0 or later according to the steps under “Installing Software,” earlier in this manual. When the Network Products Installer has finished, insert the “EtherTalk Installer” disk. Open the Previous Version folder. Drag the “EtherTalk” icon into the System Folder of the disk onto which you’re installing EtherTalk 1.2. You can remove the 2.0 or later version of EtherTalk or leave it in your System Folder to keep it available. To remove the 2.0 or later version, drag its icon out of the System Folder and into the Trash.
• SMB File Transfer Utility: To use this product, you must also install Apple File Exchange 1.1.4, which is on system software version 6.0.5 “Utilities 2” disk. Drag the Apple File Exchange folder onto the disk on which you just installed SMB File Transfer Utility.
• TokenTalk: The TokenTalk NB Card Confidence Test runs only from system software 6.0.3 floppy disks on Macintosh II, IIx, and IIcx computers.
WARNING: Do not use the TokenTalk NB Card Confidence Test with a Macintosh IIci or Macintosh IIfx. Any diagnostic results you obtain will be inaccurate. In addition, using the confidence test with some computer configurations may cause your system to freeze, requiring you to restart your computer.
REMOVING SOFTWARE
You can also use the Network Products Installer to REMOVE software from your Macintosh. To do so, follow these steps:
1. Go to the Installation dialog box.
You get to the Installation dialog box by following steps 1 through 6 in the section “Installing Software.”
2. Select the product you want to remove.
To select more than one product, hold down the Shift key as you click each product.
3. Hold down the Option key.
When you hold down the Option key, the Install button changes to the Remove button, as shown in Figure 11.
4. Click Remove.
When the Installer is finished, it displays a dialog box, as shown in Figure 12.
5. Click Continue or Quit.
If you click Continue, the Installer takes you to the Installation dialog box. Go back to step 2 and continue until you’re finished.
